Under Pressure

If you are really under pressure...Lift the ball !

I played Peter Nicol last night in Bristol and there was one thing that really stood out when playing him. That was his ability to defend and give himself time to get out of a pressure situation. I was looking to attack and take the ball in straight short when I had the opportunity particularly on my forehand. Peter being a left hander would go into the corner and if I had hot a good tight shot he would simply lift the ball across court.

Being a left hander he has an ability to get under the ball in the front right more so than a right hander and I was forced to go deep onto my backhand volley and reach up in a defensive position. Last week we have focused on the backhand counter drop but Peter really highlighted that when under real pressure just lifting the ball and staying in the rally can be hugely effective. By all means get on the ball and put the counter in quickly if you feel comfortable but if you are really under pressure stick it up high in the air and defend!
