It has got to the point
where I am considering giving my opponents a 1 game head-start. The
number of games I lose from 2-0 up or just scrape through 3-2 is
embarrassing. I realise that it is all in the mind, but any tips greatly
received. Read Tim Garner's advice. |

Definitely do not give your opponent
a game start, that's not a solution to your problem! Your issue could be
happening for a number of reasons; mental fatigue / lack of concentration,
physically tired, or lack of variation in your play are a few potential
issues.
Mental / Concentration - this is most likely the main reason for
your problem in finishing off your opponent. "Switching off" in games
can happen quickly once you are in that zone, it's very difficult to get
back in focus. Try to refocus after every point and take care between games
to start as if the match was just beginning again.
Tiredness - if you play the first games quickly it's possible you are
tired by the 3rd and 4th and only manage to scrape through once your
opponent is also fatigued in the 5th. If this sounds familiar, try to slow
the pace down a little at the beginning to keep within your physical
capabilities or get fitter!!
Variation - practise adapting your game so that you are not playing
one dimensional squash. Vary the pace of shots and the tactical element of
your game to give your opponent more to think about and not allow them to
work out your game.
These are a few potential solutions, think about your specific game and try
to utilise one or more of the above to improve your closing out of matches. |
